These boards, closely resembling a modern longboard-style surfboard in shape and dimensions, were constructed of an internal foam core surrounded by a waterproof aluminum hull similar to airplane aluminum.  The water-cooled engine took in air through a small vent on the forward deck of the board.  A short single fin was mounted to the board's back.  Throttle control was through a dial or wheel protruding from the deck - it was designed to be adjusted with the rider's foot while in motion!  A cord went from the rider to a magnetic(!) kill switch mechanism which was secured by space-age magnetic power to a recessed area on the deck.  Weight was lighter than most later powered boards but still in the 85 pound category.  A convenient carrying handle was provided on one rail.

3 CLASSIC JETBOARDS AND PARTS AVAILABLE FROM POWERSKI

Powerski, developers of the new generation  Powerski Jetboard, also have a handful of the old classic jetboards for sale.  www.Powerski.com

Daniel of Scooterhelp.com recently found an old Jet Board in less than perfect condition...

Judging by the hull damage, I'm guessing this board saw action in Vietnam.

Being an ace mechanic with small engines, Daniel took the engine out...

YIKES!

Proceeded to disassemble it...

dig that crazy carb gunk

Completely rebuilt it, cleaning and polishing all parts, replaced the main bearings and fabricating new gaskets from scratch (he traced the old gaskets and drafted them in a CAD computer program)...

And reassembled it, shiny and (nearly) new...

WOW!

The board is an ongoing project.  The engine is being tweaked and obviously the hull still needs some work - stay tuned for the next phase of this exciting project.  Thanks to Daniel of Scooterhelp.com for sending the pictures and offering us an inside view of this ambitious restoration!

UPDATE: Daniel's board is running and in the water.  See the video at: http://www.scooterhelp.com/jetboard/jb.mov

NEW!  Daniel's Scooterhelp Jet Board page - an excellent new resource for information about these classic Jet Boards, their history, and what is involved in repairing them.
