FAQ: Why doesn't Powerboarding.com do more coverage of futuristic technologically advanced hoverboards like we see in the movies? Aren't you aware of all that? Answer: You bet we are. In fact, we have been on that vibe so long that we were actually the ones who turned Hovertech and, through them, American Antigravity on to the existence of the electrostatic "Lifters" almost a decade ago! They are two of the top research and development groups in the field today, so how much more core can you get? The fact is that while we believe that more advanced hovering boards will arrive, and our personal research into them has never stopped, we haven't seen them operating yet. And at Powerboarding.com we mostly stick with what is, or is likely to be very soon, available to ride. With that said, check this cool stuff out...
NEW! COMPREHENSIVE REPORT ON THE FUTURE OF HOVERBOARDS The WORLD THINK TANK, an online "mastermind" group which collaboratively brainstorms on issues and technologies, has produced an excellent free report on the future of hoverboards. Available for online viewing in .pdf form at their website here, the 75 page report covers many aspects of future hoverboard development ranging from technology to applications, to operation of skateboards in reduced gravity conditions on the moon. A fun and professionally done read with an expansive set of links and some bonus articles at the end. The report's lead writer, Lance Winslow, is a skateboarder who applies his practical knowledge of boarding as well as technology, definitely "keeping it real." Among other contributers is Bill Butler of hovertech.com, known for his tireless and far-sighted devotion to the development of technologically advanced floating boards far more advanced than the current hovercraft-paradigm models. ARBORTECH AIRBOARD Available Now
The prominent handles and side-by-side foot placement make this somewhat on the outskirts of what can be called a board (it seems to be more like a hovercraft scooter) but... whatever. Apparently the Arbortech Airboard has a drive wheel which propels it forward and might assist with maneuvering. If you have ridden one of these, send us a test pilot's report. UNDER CONSTRUCTION! Fred Stewart's Grandson's Hoverboard Fred Stewart has built a helicopter, a hovercraft, a backpack ducted fan, and an electric car. Now he has begun work on a jet car for himself and... a hoverboard for his grandson!
Fred says, "I purchased a new weed eater with an electric starter (didn't know they even existed) for the powerplant. I built the entire assembly out of fiberglass. I first built a mold and made the body and the ducted fan assembly in 2 pieces. It is approx 5 feet long and 20 or so inches wide. The curtain is made from material I bought at the local fabric shop, I believe it is nylon. I have an engraver and I installed an engraved plate for the stop switch and start switch. It uses a set of nicad batteries for the starter and will start several times without recharging."
Fred plans to increase the power of the engine, add a larger pitch prop, and finish off the board in the near future. Then he will build a larger version that he can ride himself. Fred, a master of "projects," reports that "It is a fun project and was not hard to construct."
For those interested in using similar fiberglass techniques for their own hoverboard projects (and for the many other types of projects which he has used fiberglass for - see his web site for many interesting pictures of his projects), Fred will soon be offering a video for sale which will cover "general fiberglassing, fiberglass techniques, simple mold making, styles and types of fiberglass and resins, types of body putties and how to use, general body work and priming, finish work, and a few unusual projects. These videos will enable you to build just about anything you can imagine."
