BIG WAVE TOW-IN SURFING: JUST A TEMPORARY EVOLUTIONARY STEP ON THE ROAD TO POWERED BIG WAVE SURFING?

In the last few years, tow-in surfing has amazed us with a new approach to catching and riding monstrous-sized water beasts which are moving too fast to be able to paddle into.  But is tow-in surfing really the final frontier of big wave riding, or just an evolutionary step along the way?  Will new generations of powered boards allow big wave riders to catch monster waves using their boards' own power?

The technical challenges are immense both in terms of board design and powerplant durability.  It will probably require boards able to survive a big wipeout without flooding the engine - a board that can pop back up after being driven 50 feet or more underwater, then restart with the flick of a switch to take its rider quickly out of the impact zone. 

Big wave tow-in surfing is an incredible achievement and an awesome expression of the board-riding spirit, but it may not be the final word in big wave board evolution...
